Interpretive Hikes at The Clearing

The 83-year history, folklore and landscape of The Clearing Folk School are the subject of continuing free, interpretive hikes to the historic campus and buildings, led by volunteer docents on select Saturdays and Sundays through Oct. 28. The two-hour hiking tours begin at 1 pm at the Jens Jensen Visitor Center, located at 12171 Garrett Bay Rd in Ellison Bay. No pre-registration is necessary.

The terrain is a bit rugged in places, and sturdy walking shoes are highly recommended. Hiking dates include: Aug. 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26, Sept. 1, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30, Oct. 6, 7, 13, 14, 21, 27 and 28.

The Clearing Folk School was established in 1935 by renowned landscape architect and conservationist Jens Jensen after he purchased the original farmstead on the property in 1919. It continues to provide classes and workshops in the folk school, hands-on tradition focusing on the arts and fine crafts, humanities and natural sciences.

For more information about the docent-led hikes, weeklong retreat classes and one- and two-day workshops, call 920.854.4088 between 8 am and 4 pm or visit theclearing.org.
