Invasive Species Presentation at The Ridges

Mention invasive species in Door County and what springs to mind are invasive plant species, in particular phragmites australis, an aggressive non-native wetland grass that has long been the object of local control efforts. But those of us who grew up with the idea that worms are good for the soil might be surprised to learn that earthworms are not native. In fact, the forest ecosystem that has developed in the period following the Ice Age has done so in the absence of worms. Any presence of earthworms here now originated in other parts of the world. And their presence in an area has the potential to change the forest floor in significant ways.

On June 30 at 7 pm, Kelly Kearns will present “Identification & Control of Invasive Plants & Earthworms in Door County.” In her role as Invasive Plant Coordinator for the Natural Heritage Conservation Program of the Wisconsin DNR, Kearns works with stakeholders and experts to assess invasive species for potential regulation. Her discussion will focus on existing invasives in the county as well as some potential new invaders.

Kearns’ program is part of Lake Lessons, The Ridges popular summer speaker series. Programs are held at The Ridges Nature Center, 8166 Hwy 57 in Baileys Harbor. Admission is free.
