Island Health Organization Receives Grant

The Washington Island Community Health Program (WICHP) received a Wispact Foundation Legacy Grant, one of 76 recipients among Wisconsin nonprofits.

This was the second year for the island organization to earn the $5,000 grant, which it uses to help people afford ferry fares to go to appointments off the island, said Christine Andersen, WICHP executive director. The organization used all of the $5,000 last year.

“It’s allowed us more flexibility,” Andersen said, noting that the funds came in handy for a child who had to travel regularly to therapy, and for whom the trips otherwise would have been unaffordable.

The Foundation awarded $670,289 in total, with the grants ranging up to $10,000 each and designed to support disabled people in Wisconsin with housing, assistive devices, transportation, education and recreation.
