Island Music Festival, The Dead Soldiers & More Weekend Plans

August has arrived, and with it some of the season’s best events. Witness some professional mini golf, take in some dark southern tunes and learn about stained glass artistry.

 

Friday, Aug. 5

Opening Reception

Make your way to Algoma for James May Gallery’s opening reception, featuring mixed media by Donny Gettinger, jewelry/metalsmithing by Emily Rogstad, mixed media by Elysia Michaelsen and paintings by Ashley Peifer. Kara Slamka serves as guest curator.  5:30 – 8 pm.

Grace and Glorie

Be sure to catch Rogue Theater’s production of Grace and Glorie. Two opposites put together by circumstance, Grace, a cantankerous 90-year-old cancer patient and Glorie, her volunteer hospice worker must find common ground and learn to trust and respect each other. 7:30 pm.

The Dead Soldiers

The Dead Soldiers are interested in capturing the dark side of what it means to live in the American South. Stop by Husby’s in Sister Bay to hear original music from this American roots rock band. 11 pm.

Saturday, Aug. 6

Cherry Fest

Check out the historical display, meander through the car show, browse arts & crafts, eat good food and enjoy good music at Jacksonport’s 22nd annual Cherry Fest. 7 am – 4 pm.

Pro Mini Golf Tournament

Put your putt to the test or leave it to the professionals – either way, you’ll want to be at The Red Putter for its most anticipated event of the year. This is the only professional miniature golf tournament in the area, drawing 80 – 100 players from across the country. Read more about the tournament here. 9 am.

Stained Glass Exhibition

Spend time at Angela Lensch Gallery learning about Julie Rutherford’s latest collection from the artist herself. 10 am – 5 pm.

Sunday, Aug. 7

Door County Fair

With carnival rides, food stands and animal barns, the fair is a classic summertime events. Bring the kids and enjoy live music, magic shows and fun competitions.

Washington Island Music Festival

Head up to the Trueblood Performing Arts Center to see a performance of James M. Stephenson’s The Devil’s Tale. The performance is in co-production with Island Players. 4:30 pm.

The Full Monty

Six unemployed steelworkers are discouraged by their lack of prospects. Things take a raucous turn when the men decide to pull together a Chippendale-esque show to make some quick cash. This is pop-rock adult musical that’s sure to turn heads. 7:30 pm.
