Island Showcase

Painting by Jeanne Cauldwell.

The Washington Island Art Association (WIAA) is showcasing its members’ work in the UU Gallery for the months of January and February. Participating artists include Bob Anderson, Bruce Boeck, Julia Bresnahan, Jeanne Cauldwell, Karen DeNoto, Gary Hanks, Irene Hoefs Kuiper, Steve Lynch, Cathy Meader, Gretchen Misselt, Jane Miller, Betty Proper, Kathy Sorensen, Martha Wagner, Joel Wish, Pat Wright, Judy Yamamoto, and Margaret Young. They welcome the opportunity to share their work with peninsula residents.

The WIAA was formed in the early 1960s by a group of artists who gathered on Washington Island at Martha Stelter’s Holiday Inn to paint, share ideas and encourage each other in the development of their work. The WIAA has continued to grow in popularity and today sponsors numerous classes, open workshops, and art shows on the island.

One of the main venues where WIAA members show their work is at the Washington Island Art and Nature Center (ANC). This year the ANC is celebrating its 50th year of operation by sponsoring a fundraising campaign called the “50th Anniversary Canvas Quilt Project.” WIAA artists are supporting this campaign by donating works of art for the quilt.
