Island Students Win in Stem Contest

Eighth-grade students from the Washington Island School District have been named state winners in Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow program, which is designed to help students expand their STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) skills by choosing a problem in their community and proposing a solution.

The students – led by Tim VerBoomen, with guidance from Miranda Dahlke, both middle school teachers – chose invasive species as their community problem to solve. This project involved research and was a learning experience for everyone.

Dahlke expressed plans to use the state-winner award money to expand and improve the district’s STEM program, including purchasing more technology to enhance its robotics program and provide more learning opportunities for district students.
