Bay Shore Outdoor Store and Door County Nature and Travel are collaborating on another ecotourism venture this fall. Combining the popular activities of kayaking and hiking, the two businesses are offering a trip to the wilderness park of Isle Royale National Park. The trip is set for September 7 – 12.
The Isle Royale Kayak and Hiking Tour offers participants an opportunity to kayak and hike an internationally significant wilderness area with two seasoned outdoor enthusiasts. Rick Wylie, owner of Bay Shore Outdoor Store and Naturalist Paul Regnier will lead the six-day adventure to Lake Superior’s wilderness island.
Isle Royale National Park is designated as a wilderness park and an international biosphere preserve. The park covers 894 square miles; 210 of which is land and the remaining 684 are composed of Lake Superior and inland lakes. Travel in the park is by foot or boat. Over 150 miles of well-marked trails meander through the Isle’s forests, wetlands and shoreline, excellent for day hikes or a leisurely after dinner walk. Access to trails is literally at your doorstep. Kayak travel is only a few steps away. Paddling by kayak to historical sites and hiking trailheads are planned for the tour.
The kayak and hiking tour includes six nights lodging, two in Houghton, Michigan and four at the Rock Harbor Lodge on Isle Royale, most meals, kayaks, transportation to the island, guides, and fees.
