Base Camp Coffee Bar is showing the work of Sister Bay photographer and pastel artist Kay McKinley, now through mid-September. McKinley displays three large-scale pastel paintings of Door County scenes along with photographs taken on a recent trip to Italy. The photos are arranged in eight triptychs that explore iconic Italian subject matter, such as Venetian gondolas and dining al fresco.
McKinley used an iPad mini to capture the atmosphere of Florence, Verona and Venice. Once edited and arranged in themes, she then custom printed the images on archival watercolor paper with archival inks.
The former photojournalist has been a photographer for more than 30 years. Having worked with a full range of cameras, from analog medium format Hasselblads, to broadcast quality video cameras, the recent technology was initially a hard sell.
“I thought I would sacrifice clarity for mobility, but I think the results speak for themselves,” she said.
Base Camp is located at 10904 Highway 42, in the basement of Ecology Sports. For more information, email [email protected].
