It’s All About Lighthouses at the Maritime Museum

The Door County Maritime Museum will celebrate lighthouses with a new art exhibit titled The Lighthouse Show. The show opens May 11 and features the works of a number of talented Door County outdoor painters including Bill Doyle, Sally Everhardus, Glenn Gerber, Barbara Kenyon, Jim Leatham, Randy Rasmussen and Rob Williams.

Door County has 11 lighthouses, most of which are still operational, making it one of the most populated areas in the country for these sentinels of the sea. Each light has its own distinctive style and backdrop, making them a popular subject of painters.

Adding to the exhibit is a silent auction of collectible figurines to benefit the museum.

The Lighthouse Show will continue through June 23, and will be up during the Museum’s annual Door County Lighthouse Festival, June 7 – 9. The festival includes a variety of land-based tours and boat excursions, most of which still have tickets available.

The Maritime Museum is also seeking maritime-themed works from Edward “Pudge” DeGraff for an upcoming exhibit dedicated to the popular Door County carver.

“His whimsical wooden characters delighted the world until his passing in 1997. Each carving was unique, and came to life at the hands of his wife Mary who hand-painted every figurine,” said Museum Executive Director Bob Desh. “We are seeking individuals willing to loan their treasured nautical-themed DeGraff carvings to us for the exhibit.”
