It’s ‘All About Pollinators’ at The Ridges with Beekeeping Workshop

It’s “All About Pollinators!” at The Ridges in Baileys Harbor, with a number of programs scheduled for Oct. 7 & 8.

“Intro to Beekeeping” will be held Oct. 7, 6-9 pm. With the help of expert beekeeper Marge Trocki, learn the basics of bee biology and have a chance to examine the inner workings of an observation bee hive. Guests will leave with an understanding of how to get started in beekeeping, the equipment and supplies needed, and the joys and challenges of managing a honeybee hive. This program will be held at the Cook-Albert Fuller Center. The fees are $25 members, $30 public.

On Oct. 8, 10 am – 4pm, there will be displays of the inner workings of a real bee hive, native plants that bees pollinate, and the art of beekeeping in the “Beekeepers Corner.” Throughout the day an expert beekeeper will be around to answer questions about starting a hive. Kids will have the opportunity to dress up as a beekeeper for a photo-op. Admission is free.

Also for the kids is Pooh Bear Corner. There will be activities and books for kids to immerse themselves in the honey-filled world of Winnie the Pooh. Take a hike out in nature and explore The Ridges’ woods as Pooh Bear would explore his Hundred Acre Woods.

Guests are also invited to experience the differences in honey based on which plants the honey bees are pollinating. Honey will be available from local keepers as well as keepers from other parts of the country.

In a “Native Pollinators” program, learn about the variety of native pollinators and what you can do to help them in your own backyard.

All Saturday programs are held at The Ridges Cook-Albert Fuller Center, 8166 Hwy 57 in Baileys Harbor. For more information, visit RidgesSanctuary.org or call 920.839.2802.
