Jacksonport Women’s Club Promotes Tree Beautification

The Jacksonport Women’s Club has initiated a tree beautification program for the town, hoping to see the scenic byways, county roads, small lakes, and parks lined with Malus x ‘Prairifire’, a highly disease resistant ornamental crabapple.

Prairifires, which bloom about Memorial Day, grow to about 20 to 25 feet high and wide. The trees need some sun, the leaves are a beautiful dark red in the fall, and they hold their fruit all winter, maintaining a good source of food for the birds.

Malus x ‘Prairifire’ was developed by Dr. Dan Dayton, a renowned Professor of Horticulture at the University of Illinois. Dayton came to Door County to work with the Peninsular Agricultural Research Station, and his family continues to summer in Jacksonport.

The trees will be ordered through Earthscapes for planting after the first frost. Participants will be responsible for the tree, choosing the location, planting and care; however, if help is needed the Sevastopol Agriculture Department will assist as a community service project. The anticipated cost will be approximately $50.
