James May Gallery Presents ‘Somatic Shapes’

James May Gallery in Algoma presents Somatic Shapes, featuring new work by Liz Rundorff Smith, Mollie Oblinger and Barbara Campbell Thomas. The opening reception will be Sept. 6, 5:30-8 pm, and the show will be on display through Sept. 30.

Somatic Shapes refers to the way the exhibition’s artists use both positive and negative shapes in unusual, atypical ways. Smith creates luscious encaustic paintings that feel both sculptural and two-dimensional. Oblinger has created wall sculptures from the imprints of tree rings through which the viewer can feel the poignant, empty space where the solid tree once was. Thomas pieces together sewn fabric shapes in a method similar to quilting, but the results are stunning, contemporary abstracts that are more akin to paintings.
