The Birch Creek Associates will host their seventh annual fall fundraiser on Oct. 4 with dinner and a concert featuring Birch Creek’s Vocal Jazz Program Director Janice Borla and her rhythm section. Associates’ Membership Chair Joan Guasta said, “If you were unable to attend one of Janice’s performances during the Vocal Jazz session, you missed out on a truly entertaining concert. Here’s another chance to hear her and have a wonderful meal!”
Borla’s recent CD release Promises to Burn received numerous outstanding reviews: “Among the best, boldest and most innovative vocalists around … vocal-based jazz symbiosis rarely reaches such splendor.” (Jazz Times)
In the words of veteran jazz journalist Neil Tesser, “She shatters the stereotype of the jazz vocalist as a poseur or wannabe, infatuated with the idea of improvisation but lacking the mettle to carry it off: she’s a musician who happens to play voice.”
Borla has never been content to offer yet another “styling” of an old jazz standard, but has made it her mission to employ her voice as a jazz instrument, assuming an equal role with the other instrumentalists in the ensemble. She is continually lauded for her gorgeous sound, impeccable technique, adventurous repertoire, and imaginative improvisations.
Mojo Rosa’s of Egg Harbor will cater dinner, featuring grilled romaine salad, grilled and roasted pork tenderloin, baked chicken with prosciutto, vegetable side dishes, and a selection of desserts from Pink Bakery.
Doors open at 5 pm for cocktail hour with a cash bar, followed by dinner catered by Mojo Rosa’s, and finally the concert at 7 pm. The price is $75 per person. Space is limited, and reservations are required. Call 920.868.3763 by October 1.
