January Events at Artists Guild

The Artists Guild offers a variety of classes, events, and workshops in their new space.

Is January looming as a long, dull month? Artists Guild in Sturgeon Bay announces a number of art opportunities to start the year.

• “Pastels,” January’s youth art class, will be held on Jan. 12, for three age groups. Sarah Bradley will teach students about the characteristics and techniques of soft pastels.

Classes will be held from 9:30 – 11 am (ages 5 – 8), 12:30 – 2:30 pm (ages 9 – 12), and 3:30 – 5:30 pm (ages 13 – 18).

The cost, including all materials, for the morning class is $25, and $30 for the afternoon classes.

• “Considerations in Drawing the Human Figure,” taught by Craig Blietz, takes place on four consecutive Tuesday evenings from 6 – 9 pm, starting Jan. 15. Students of all skill levels will draw from a live, unclothed model and receive instruction in expressive figure drawing. Blietz, a noted artist and instructor, will present demos, and provide individual instruction tailored to the student’s needs.

The cost is $260, plus a small supplies list. The price includes free membership in the Life Drawing Guild during the four weeks of the class. Pre-registration is required.

• “Life Drawing Guild” is a 10-week self-guided studio session with a live model. Artists of all levels bring their own materials and draw various-length poses. The sessions are Wednesday evenings, 6:15 – 8:15 pm, beginning Jan. 16 and ending March 6.

Membership is $100 for 10 weeks and requires pre-registration; there are reduced rates for high school and college students. Non-members may attend a single session for $20.

• “Art Speak” is a new series that will present a monthly program exploring topical issues in art. Healing Arts is the topic in January. The critically acclaimed documentary I Remember Better When I Paint will be screened and followed by a discussion.

This program is free and scheduled for Jan. 19, 10 am – 12 pm.

• On Jan. 20 from 2 – 4 pm, Artists Guild will hold a one-time, free “Portrait Session.” Artists of any skill level may bring their own materials and work from a live model in a portrait setting. Pre-registration is required.

• The kick-off session for “Art Fundamentals” is Jan. 26, 10 am – 12 pm. Each month’s Art Fundamentals will focus on a new medium and January’s topic is pastels. Students will be given a history of and a working foundation in the medium of soft pastels. Materials are included and students will have the opportunity to explore and create their own work.

The class costs $30, and is open to those 16 and older. Pre-registration is required.
