WHAT HAPPENED

• The Door County Economic Development Corporation announced at its April 29 annual investors meeting at Stone Harbor Resort & Conference Center in Sturgeon Bay that the Jim Olson Automotive Group is the winner of the Door County Industry of the Year Award and the Lautenbach family, owners of Orchard Country Winery & Market in Fish Creek, are the winners of the annual Door County Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The annual Industry of the Year Award recognizes a local construction, service or manufacturing business that has made a substantial impact on the community and enjoyed significant accomplishments during the past year. The Entrepreneur of the Year Award celebrates those individuals who have taken the initiative to start and grow a successful small business in Door County. Eligible businesses include those with fewer than 50 full time employees, exhibiting exciting growth potential and that have at least three years of successful business experience.

• The 2015 season opening for the Cana Island Lighthouse is being delayed due to continued work on the Cana Island Restoration project. A May 15 opening is expected. “The contractors have been busy removing lead paint from the tower. This has taken a little longer than anticipated due to weather delays,” said Door County Maritime Museum Executive Director Rick O’Farrell. “They will then repaint the tower and begin the next phase in the restoration project, landscape restoration.” Landscape prep work is expected to take place in mid-June and should not cause visitor issues. All dates are subject to change and people are asked to visit the museum’s website at dcmm.org for current information.

• Another detection of H5 avian influenza has been made in a 108,000-bird turkey flock in Barron County, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection announced on April 28. This is the seventh case in Wisconsin and the third in Barron County. While lethal to domestic poultry, the strain of virus detected is not known to have caused disease in humans and is not expected to pose a risk to public health or the food supply. The H5 avian influenza virus was first detected in Wisconsin at a commercial chicken flock in Jefferson County on April 13, which led to the slaughter of more than 180,000 egg-laying chickens. Since then five additional flocks were detected in Barron, Juneau, Chippewa counties and another in Jefferson bringing the total of birds affected to nearly 1.4 million in Wisconsin. A ban on poultry movement to shows, exhibitions and swap meets in Barron, Chippewa, Jefferson, and Juneau counties remains in effect.

• In what is believed to be the final meeting of the Ad Hoc EMS Study Committee at 8:30 am on Wednesday, May 6, the Town of Jacksonport is hoping the committee decides to locate a mid-northern Door ambulance station in the town. The committee is also considering locating the station at the Egg Harbor fire station on County I in Carlsville. Jacksonport Town Chair Randy Halstead, who also serves as a county supervisor and sits on the ad hoc committee, said land is one big advantage Jacksonport has over the other location. The Jacksonport Area Business Association has sent letters in support of locating in Jacksonport to all the members of the ad hoc committee, and the town approved its own letter at the April 28 meeting. “It would be pretty nice if we could hook up an ambulance station here in Jacksonport,” Halstead said.
