Joosse, Graef Tell True Tale in New Children’s Book

The children’s-book team of author Barbara Joosse and illustrator Renée Graef – both award winners – has brought a dramatic rescue to life in the illustrated picture book The Fishermen, the Horse, and the Sea (Wisconsin Historical Society Press).

In this heroic true story, a boy, a horse and a fishing family brave an 1895 storm on Lake Michigan to save sailors in peril on an overturned schooner. Young readers will be captivated by the intrepid draft horse that swam through crashing waves with a man on its back and pulled a drowning man to safety, using its tail as a lifeline.

Joosse, of Port Washington, Wisconsin, has written more than 50 books for children. Graef has illustrated 80-plus children’s works and divides her time between Los Angeles and Wisconsin. The author and/or illustrator will appear at several events, including in Door County.
