• Baylake Bank Premier Club and the Door County YMCA will present an informational program, “Leader Dogs for the Blind,” at the Door County YMCA, 1900 Michigan Street, Sturgeon Bay on Wednesday, August 5, 9:45-10:45 am. Maggie Weir, Puppy Program Counselor, will present the program and she will bring Keena, a five-month-old black lab, with her.

The public is invited to come and learn the history, purpose and how these dogs help the blind. Leader dogs for the blind has been providing dog guides to people who are blind and visually impaired to enhance their mobility, independence and quality of life. Maggie and her husband Jeff, have raised 18 dogs and housed two breeding stock dogs.

• Christ Child Society of Door County is holding their yearly Fundraising Luncheon/Style Show on Wednesday August 5. The event will be help at Gordon Lodge, at 1420 Pine Drive off of County Q, Baileys Harbor. The cost is $30 and includes luncheon, tax, tip, style show, door prizes and donation. Social hour will begin at 11:30 am and will have a silent auction and raffle. Immediately following, at 12:30 pm, lunch will begin along with the style show.

The fashions presented in the style show are from Christine’s Casuals, Hide Side Boutique, Country Lady, Higbees and APJ Custom Handbags.

Christ Child Society of Door County has been active in Door County since 1996. The Christ Child Society is a national non-profit organization founded in 1887 by Mary Virginia Merrick in Washington, DC. Donations go to a variety of programs including their main one, the Layette Program, which provides essentials for new mothers who need them.

• Gibraltar track students have run the trails at Peninsula State Park for decades and on Monday, August 10, athletes and Coach Paul Bremel will be giving back by working to enhance the entrance to the trails. Long called the “Chief Kahquados” trail, the starting point is in need of a face-lift. Easy wood work and light landscaping, as well as installation of a sign highlighting the life of Potawatomi Chief Kahquados, are on the agenda.

Individuals interested in helping the efforts should meet behind Gibraltar School, near the tennis courts, at 9 am. Work will continue throughout the day, with some muscle work provided by Friends of Peninsula State Park. Participation counts towards service requirements for high school students.
