Turtle Ridge is featuring two of the artists from the June is Jewelry Month showcase this week. Jennifer Merchant and Bongsang Cho employ unusual materials, master techniques and playful designs.
Bongsang Cho is a South Korea-born metalsmith. This young artist combines traditional techniques of forming metal with new technology to create innovative work. Beautiful, strong and textural, his pieces display the contrast between structural forms and natural beauty of material. Acclaim for his work by The Smithsonian Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art and the National Endowment for the Arts are piling up to this young artist’s credit.
Describing his work, Bongsang said, “By juxtaposing traditional smithing with advanced laser welding, I connect the past and present, build intriguing designs, and exceed the limitations of convention.”
Each piece by Merchant is sculpted by hand from a unique slab of printed papers layered between solid acrylic sheet using a combination of metalsmithing and woodworking tools and techniques.
Merchant, a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design, said of her work, “My work takes inspiration from faceted geometric forms, pop art, fashion, op-art and art deco.”
June is Jewelry Month runs through June 30 at Turtle Ridge, 11736 Mink River Rd. The gallery is open daily 10 am – 5 pm. For more information visit turtleridgegallery.com.
