Just Dessert

On a not-so-lovely Sunday afternoon, with the overwhelming brownness and frigid chill of early March limiting our options of activities, my mother, my sister Tracy, and I decide to indulge.

Under soft candle-like lighting, we sip steaming coffee while the table next to us enjoys conversation and award-winning cherry-stuffed French Toast. Our waitress at the White Gull Inn in Fish Creek presents a tray of dessert options: tiramisu, pecan pie, pound cake with strawberries, and cherry pie (of course). We choose a slice of the French silk pie and a serving of cherry bread pudding.

Mom is “pleased” to visit Door County, and one of her favorite restaurants in the off-season, “I like the quiet…not the busyness – there’s not so many distractions, it’s nice to relax.’

Tracy and Mom (aka Kris) Slattery enjoy desserts at the White Gull Inn in Fish Creek.

Tracy takes a bite of the French silk pie, drizzled with chocolate. “It’s rich and creamy,” she says, while particularly enjoying the crumbly Oreo-like crust.

Mom describes the cherry bread pudding, sprinkled over with powered sugar, as “light…not over the top…warm and amazing…flavorful…I really mean it, this is so good! There could always be room for cherry bread pudding.”

The portion sizes are perfect for one or two or three to share, and the presentation is lovely. “Such a Door County atmosphere,” says Mom as we button up our coats. “This was such a good splurge!”
