Kaija Johnson Returns to Lead Write On’s Youth Programs

Kaija Johnson, Write On, Door County’s Youth Program Coordinator, returns this summer to lead programs for youth and for families. Throughout the summer, Johnson is joined by special friends to assist with classes.

There is a wide variety of opportunities for children of all ages and for families in this summer’s offerings. Traveling Trolley Tales returns with three different excursions planned. All sessions begin at Door County Trolley in Egg Harbor and travel to their destinations. “A Visit to the Sign Fairy” on July 7 will take participants to Ellison Bay where they will meet artist and writer Jill Harding. On July 18, “Where the Wild Things Write” will take kids on a writing and discovery journey through Peninsula State Park. “History/MyStory,” the final Traveling Trolley Tales, takes place Aug. 8, as participants visit historical sites in Sturgeon Bay.

New programs for families this year include “What’s Got Your Goat?” on June 12. Families will meet at Door County Creamery and take a bus to their goat farm. After touring the farm, participants will sample cheese and have lunch, complete with gelato. All participants (parents and kids) will write about the experience.

Special friends join Johnson on July 13 for “Amazing Animal Origami Poems.” Kids will create poems about their favorite animals and make their own animals through origami, the Japanese art of folding paper into decorative shapes and figures. Other programs include “Would You Rather?” with Crossroads Executive Director Coggin Heeringa and the return of “All Weather Poems.” Johnson will also lead the youth and family activities at Write On’s first annual Bloomsday celebration in Sawyer Park, Sturgeon Bay, on June 16.
