Kevin Leroy Wins Kayak Marathon Around Washington Island

These kayakers are all smiles after completing a crossing of Death’s Door Sunday at the Washington Island Canoe and Kayak event.

Kevin Leroy finished first in the Washington Island Canoe and Kayak Event’s marathon course June 18. Leroy took on a strong east wind that brought 5-foot waves in some parts of the course to finish in 3:29:32.
Twenty of the 22 paddlers who started the race were able to finish the third annual event that also featured a half marathon distance and a crossing of Death’s Door on Sunday.
“People came from Iowa, Minnesota, Milwaukee and Chicago,” said organizer Valerie Fons. “It was an amazing race.”
