Kewaunee, Algoma Libraries Go Fine-free on Children’s, Teen Materials

Effective June 1, the Kewaunee and Algoma Public Libraries are removing overdue fines for children’s and teen print materials, regardless of the age of the person checking out the materials. Removing these fines – while still requiring the items to be returned, and preferably on time – will allow more people to enjoy the materials. Patrons will continue to be charged for lost or damaged items.

Many libraries are adopting this practice to remove a potential barrier to library services, help increase childhood literacy and combat the “summer slump” that causes students to lose skills between grades. The response nationwide has been a high return of both materials and library users.

The two libraries also have a comprehensive summer reading program planned. Learn more at algomapubliclibrary.org and kewauneepubliclibrary.org.
