Kewaunee Sheriff Warns of Recent Scam

The Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Department is issuing a warning to residents that an old scam is beginning to resurface, with a slightly different twist. This scam is similar to one that grew in popularity in 2015, when the Better Business Bureau (BBB) was receiving numerous complaints about Internal Revenue Service (IRS) impersonators calling people with a request for immediate payment to avoid arrest. Now, the phone call is a recording claiming to be the “cops” and the message states, “Call cops as there are four serious allegations pressed on your name at this moment. We would request you to get back to us so that we can discuss about this case before taking any legal action against you. The number to reach us is 646.809.9636. I repeat 646.809.9636. Thank you.” The Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Department reminds us, before a person is arrested, they will have been given due notice of the reason for that arrest and not rely on a phone call to gain compliance. “If you are in fact facing any type of action, be it through a local, state or federal agency, a more formal and document process will ensue,” said Kewaunee County Sheriff Matt Joski.
