Kickstarter, an online funding platform for creative projects, has a new Door County project listing – Growing Up Harley, a full-color illustrated children’s book. Harley was a well-known camel from Door County who was frequently photographed, raised funds for the Door County Humane Society, marched in area parades and kissed Miss Door County. Harley developed intestinal problems when he was nearly five-years-old and did not survive.
The book is a collaboration among Lisa and Ken Jeansonne, Kay Bidwell Loberg, and Mark Engeldinger. The Jeansonnes want to honor Harley’s legacy while teaching children about camels with this project.
Loberg, the author, borrowed Lisa’s scrapbook on Harley’s life and based the children’s book on Harley’s antics. The story also includes camel facts to help children learn about camels.
Engeldinger, a student at UW – Green Bay, will illustrate the book. The target date for completion is July 2013.
