Kids Que at Death’s Door BBQ

New this year at the 7th Annual Death’s Door BBQ, held Aug. 25 on Washington Island, is a Kid’s Que. The contest is open to the first eight entries in each of the two age groups, 7-12 and 13-18. The 7-12 age group cook pork sausage burgers while the 13-18 age group cook pork chops. All the meat is provided by Smithfield Foods.

Each cook will provide their own rubs, seasonings and sauces. They can also garnish with anything they want. Numbered turn-in boxes are provided, and each box must contain six individual servings. Contestants are provided a pre-lit kettle cooker courtesy of Lamperts of Sister Bay. Registration is under the big tent at 8:30 am, with the turn-in time at 10 am. Contestants must have a parent or guardian on the contest grounds during the competition. Parents/guardians may only help with cutting, heat or anything dangerous. The child is to be allowed to make the decisions, but the adult is allowed to coach verbally.

Judging is done by certified Kansas City Barbeque Society judges. Each entry is scored from 2 to 9 for appearance, taste and tenderness. Entry fee is $25 with cash and trophies being awarded to first through third place. Every contestant receives a $250 scholarship to Fox Valley Technical College.
