Middle school students will be able to experiment with visual storytelling during KIDS WOW!, a creativity camp offered July 22-26 by Write On, Door County and led by graphic novelist Aaron Renier.
The camp will introduce children in sixth through eighth grades to a variety of comic-making practices and techniques, including writing, storyboarding, penciling, inking and pre-press preparation. They will complete a narrative-driven comic and see their work in an actual comic book. Materials, supplies and snacks will be provided; participants should take their own lunches.
The camp, held at the Juddville Write On property, will run 9 am to 3 pm each day. Arrangements can be made for students who need to stay later due to transportation issues. Tuition for the full week is $175; a limited number of scholarships are available to Door County students.
Renier has authored graphic novels for younger readers – Spiral-Bound, Walker Bean and Walker Bean and the Knights of the Waxing Moon – and teaches drawing and comics at universities in Chicago. He earned the Eisner Award in 2006 for talent deserving of wider recognition and was an inaugural resident for the Sendak Fellowship in 2010.
KIDS WOW! enrollment is limited to 15 students, so register early online at writeondoorcounty.org or by calling 920.868.1457.
