Kitchens, Jacque Seek State Funds to Aid Washington Island

Rep. Joel Kitchens and Sen. André Jacque sent a letter to Gov. Tony Evers, asking him to include no more than $2 million to help defray a portion of the disaster-recovery costs related to the natural disaster that cut power to Washington Island in June. They pointed out in the letter that the proposal requires a 30 percent local cost-share, and it is supported by the County of Door and Town of Washington board. “Because Washington Island is one of the most isolated communities in the state, the impact was not sufficiently broad enough to trigger FEMA Public Assistance, even though damages vastly exceeded the county per-capita threshold for the federal program,” they wrote. “We are committed to helping lead a bipartisan, multi-organizational effort to support this proposal that will provide needed economic relief to a small community …”
