Kopseker Grant Enables Wellness Ministry to Continue

Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church in Ellison Bay has been awarded a 2008 grant in the amount of $16,300 to support expenses for their Health and Wellness Ministry Coordinator and Parish Nurse services.

The Greater Green Bay Community Foundation in conjunction with the Door County Community Foundation selected the recipient for the Allyce Kopseker grant which stipulates that the funds be used for northern Door County residents age sixty and over. The free services provided by the programs will use special outreach efforts to include persons throughout the community in addition to Shepherd of the Bay parishioners. The goal of the grant is to allow persons to remain independent in their homes with access to medical services and thereby retain their dignity.a

Carol Stevenson, RN, is now serving as the Parish Nurse and the Health and Wellness Ministry Coordinator. The funds allow expansion of the existing Parish Nurse services to include visits in private homes, assisted living and nursing home facilities plus occasional hospital visits. The services will primarily be available north of Ephraim.

The roles of the Parish Nurse include: health educator, personal health counselor, referral agent, facilitator of volunteer services, and spiritual support resource person.

The Health and Wellness Ministry Cabinet provides blood pressure screenings, nutrition counseling, Tai Chi for Health classes, and CPR and AED training plus monthly Community Health Information Programs that follow a quarterly theme.
