Laurel Hauser was recently named managing editor of the Washington Island Observer, the newspaper serving the Door County island community of 710 year-round residents. The Observer is published weekly during summer months and alternate weeks during the remainder of the year.
Established in 1979, the Observer was purchased in 2012 by more than a dozen families interested in bringing high-quality news about Washington Island to residents and others with ties to the Island. More than 70 volunteer writers and photographers provide content for its pages. The paper has won awards in the Wisconsin Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper Contest.
The Observer has 1,000 subscribers and more than 2,000 newsstand readers, and it publishes an online edition available by subscription.
Hauser was a longtime director of charitable giving for the Door County Land Trust and, in addition to acting as editor of the Observer, works as a freelance writer. She lives in Sturgeon Bay with her family and spends part of each week on Washington Island.
