Learn About the Great Fire of 1871

During special presentations on Oct. 5, 10:30 am, and Oct. 6, 10:30 am and 1 pm, at the Belgian Heritage Center, Barb (Englebert) Chisholm will again reenact the story of her great-grandmother, Emmerence (Gaspard) Englebert, who survived the Great Fire in October 1871. Chisholm will also share the story of the massive forest fire – which raged in and around Peshtigo, as well as in Southern Door County – and how it greatly affected the Belgian settlement area and its people.  The presentations will also include screenings of the new oral-history video, Women’s Work, featuring stories told in English and Walloon about the role of women in the Belgian settlement area during the early days.

Belgian pie and coffee will be served. All donations will benefit the Belgian Heritage Center, 1255 Cty DK in Brussels, in its mission to preserve and promote the area’s culture, history and architecture.
