Learn and Explore the Caves of Door County

The Wisconsin Speleological Society (WSS) will host a free public program on caves at 11 am on Saturday, July 17. A WSS Board Meeting will precede the program at 10 am. The meetings will be held in the Jane Greene Room of the Door County Library at 107 South 4th Avenue in Sturgeon Bay.

A part of the presentation will be a film featuring Door County caves and cave equipment entitled, “Caves of Door County,” by Gary K. Soule. Following the meeting, at 1:30 pm, the participants may gather near the picnic shelter in Murphy County Park for a free guided tour of nearby Horseshoe Bay Cave. Usually, this cave is gated and closed to the public. Information will be provided on the history and geology of the cave, along with the protection of it’s residents: bats.

Participants are asked to bring a flashlight with fresh batteries, wear old clothing, gloves, and protective head gear is possible. This is a family oriented trip will be in the feature the front section of the cave. A side trip to the Lautenbach Woods natural pits will also be offered.
