Letter: Climb the Tower at Potawatomi

Visitors to Door County and residents are understandably concerned that Eagle Tower in Peninsula State Park has been closed.

We do not know the fate of the structure yet, but in the meantime we would like to make everyone aware that there is an alternative.

Potawatomi State Park is only about 10 minutes from Sturgeon Bay and has a very similar tower, which is only one foot shorter. In 2010 it too was closed for repairs as there was a major crack in one of the main support bars. It was necessary to find a white oak tree large enough and straight enough to provide a 22-foot-long beam to repair the tower, and after two years it was re-opened to the public.

I encourage everyone to visit Potawatomi State Park and climb the tower there as the view is quite incredibly lovely from the top, especially now in autumn.

You won’t be disappointed. The park also has many trails and other attractive views.

The park is accessible from Hwy. 42/57 on county PD just south of Sturgeon Bay and is about 2½ miles from the main highway.
