Letter to the Editor: Choose Laurel Hauser

It is with great pleasure that I write this letter of endorsement for Laurel Hauser, candidate for District 7 alderperson, but dedicated to all people, both young and old of the City of Sturgeon Bay. She and her husband, John, have lived in Sturgeon Bay for 20 years and raised their son and daughter. Her background is diverse:  Editor of the Washington Observer, general manager of the White Gull Inn, for 15 years she worked for the Door County Land Trust helping to preserve our precious natural resources. She co-chaired the group that raised a half-million dollars for the Sturgeon Bay skate park to help provide our youth with positive options. She is a former member of the Sturgeon Bay Plan Commission and Laurel is extremely dedicated to maintaining the rich history of this wonderful town. She recognizes the need for affordable housing. As a board member of Sunshine House/Sunflower Cottage, she works to improve the lives of the disabled and elderly members of our community. She is concerned about the needs of the disadvantaged and disenfranchised. Laurel envisions a city government that provides transparency, is more welcoming to the young professionals of Sturgeon Bay. She is not opposed to development of the westside waterfront, as long as it follows the law. “Saving the best of what you have is not in opposition to economic development, she says.  “They go together.”

As a senior advocate, Laurel and I have discussed issues facing seniors in our community. She is deeply concerned about addressing the needs of our aging population. I am convinced she will be the best representative for both young and older. She is dedicated, concerned, extremely intelligent and can see the big picture. She truly cares about this town, its people and working towards its betterment.
