Letter to the Editor: Congressman Mike Gallagher Voted Against You

On Thursday, May 4th, Gallagher voted for the Trumpcare bill. In Door County we have 26,800 residents of whom approximately 26 percent are over 50 years old. If Trumpcare becomes law and if you are over age 50 (and under 65), your premiums will skyrocket.

Approximately, one third of all Americans have pre-existing conditions. So again if this bill becomes law, the state can apply for a waiver under Trumpcare which will allow your insurance company to charge you astronomically high premiums which could result in you having to give up your insurance. The American Medical Association opposed Trumpcare because it does not protect those of us with preexisting conditions. So if Trumpcare becomes law and you have preexisting conditions, this bill could cause you to give up your insurance. If you are pregnant, have an emergency or are a baby and require prenatal care the same state waivers could result in denying you medical care.

Trumpcare ends expansion of Medicaid to poor adults and cuts Medicaid overall jeopardizing coverage for children, for people with disabilities and elderly people in nursing homes.

So Gallagher voted against you if you are over 50, have any preexisting conditions, are poor, have a disability, are pregnant, have an emergency, are elderly and live in a nursing home, or are a child or a baby! That’s just about all of us!

He voted for the wealthiest two percent of the U.S. population and corporations who will get billions of dollars in tax credits. He voted for the insurance companies. And he voted for a Trump win over the health needs of his constituents!

Surely we can find a candidate in 2018 who will vote for you and the health and wellbeing of his or her constituents! We can do much better!
