Letter to the Editor: Discrimination Destroys Our Democracy

My Mom always told me to judge a person by “what they do; not what they say.” Donald Trump has nominated 42 people for U.S. attorney. Only one is a woman. His actions reflect his vision of how laws in America should be enforced and who is qualified to make these determinations.

Have you seen the photo of the president and House Speaker Ryan celebrating the passage of the House health care bill denying health care to 24 million Americans? Everyone in the photo is laughing and smiling. But more notable is that there is only one woman and no minorities in the group of 40-plus elected officials in the photo. They are all white males with the exception of one. Does this represent America? Does one woman out of 42 district attorney nominations represent America?

President Barack Obama tried to build diversity among U. S. attorneys in his first year in office and nominated 20 U.S. attorneys – five of them were women.

A government dominated by white males – whether in the White House Cabinet, the Judicial Administration, the House or Senate does not represent the concerns of all citizens. Clearly the current administration has a very narrow view of what “makes America great” and apparently women are not part of that vision.

Women represent more than half of the country’s population. We can do better than nominating one woman out of 42 for U.S. attorney positions! Please write to the president and tell him you want to be represented. And when it comes time to vote, ask your candidate or representative whether or not he/she supports the president in his vision of a very different America than the “real”  (not fake) America we are today!
