Letter to the Editor: Gamesmanship?

When the three pro-granary Sturgeon Bay alderwomen apparently colluded to miss three consecutive meetings called to seal the fate of the granary, they caused the meetings to be aborted after they didn’t show, due to lack of a quorum. The Pulse article describes this as “a bit of gamesmanship.”

Gamesmanship?

No, I would call this making a mockery out of our democratic process. Or maybe obstructing the work of a properly elected legislative body. Or maybe just gutless.

This is reminiscent of several years ago. I’m talking about that disgraceful exodus to Illinois that minority Wisconsin State legislators took when it became apparent that Gov. Walker’s agenda was about to be enacted. They fled to deny a quorum. So that no vote could be taken. They achieved nothing but making themselves all look like a bunch of undemocratic crybaby jerks. Even to those of their own party. This was certainly no way to make friends, or to create increased sympathy for their point of view.

So shame on the whole lot. If you don’t want to show up, do your job, even when things aren’t going your way, don’t run for office.
