Letter to the Editor: Kudos to Senator Baldwin

Concerned and active citizens often call or write their representatives when they disagree with what’s going on in Washington. However, it is also important to give positive reinforcement when our representatives have earned it. Senator Tammy Baldwin has recently earned some positive reinforcement for several actions.
Firstly, she and a group of her senatorial colleagues wrote a letter to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein asking him to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. We didn’t get a special prosecutor, but a special counsel has been appointed to head an investigation into this matter. Senator Baldwin stood up and was part of the pressure to get this investigation started.
Secondly, Senator Baldwin is co-sponsoring a bill with Senator John McCain that would require drug companies to justify steep price increases. She is willing to work across the aisle to make sure her constituents will not be burdened with unjustified increases for drugs that they have to take daily or that might save their lives.
Thirdly, Senator Baldwin is co-sponsoring a bill with the Republican senator from Maine, Susan Collins, to reauthorize the Lifespan Respite Care Plan for the next five years. This program allows full-time caregivers to take a temporary break from their responsibilities of caring for aging or disabled loved ones.
And fourthly, on May 19, 2017, she introduced bipartisan legislation supporting the maritime industry. This bill addresses the critical need for trained workers in the maritime industry, which is an important segment of Wisconsin’s economy and U.S. economy. The co-sponsors of this bill are three Republicans and one other Democrat.
Tammy Baldwin deserves to be congratulated for standing up and calling for an independent investigation into any threats to the integrity of American elections. And she has to be admired for sponsoring bipartisan legislation which will improve and protect American lives.
We need honesty and integrity from our elected officials. When we see it, we should applaud it. Thank you Senator Baldwin.
