Letter to the Editor: Literacy Door County Celebrates

Literacy Door County celebrated their first annual Student/Tutor Recognition Event on Sunday, May 7 at Hope Church in Sturgeon Bay. This event acknowledged the hard work and commitment both our students and our tutors have made. Since many of our students have families and job responsibilities, they know the necessity to improve their speaking and writing skills and the benefits to their families and the community. We recognized two students for working on their citizenship requirements and several others for their achievement of fulfilling the requirements to advance to more difficult curriculum. We thanked those students and tutors who participated in Write-On Door County’s Mother Language Day event. Also honored were three tutors for working a combined total of over 250 hours. Since its inception in 2015 Literacy Door County has provided over 750 hours to about 30 students.

We would like to acknowledge and thank our sponsors for providing goods and treats for this event: Tadych’s Econo Foods, Door County Dental Care, Door County Memorial Hospital, Hope Church, Door County Coffee & Tea and Alley Katz Boutique. We would also like to thank our committee members: Carol Babb, Pat Scieszinski, Sue Eliason, John Contratto and Sandy Stoneham for putting together this event. Literacy Door County provides one-on-one adult tutoring for basic literacy and English Language Learners (ELL). Our mission is to share the power of learning English through education, which strengthens this community.
