Letter to the Editor: Save Funding for Great Lakes Restoration Initiative

President Trump has appointed Scott Pruitt as the head of the Environmental Protection Agency. The mission of this agency is to protect our environment, which is now being threatened at an alarming rate by climate change. If you believe in scientific research and its conclusions, carbon dioxide emissions are the primary contributors to the environmental climate change we are seeing today. Last Thursday, March 9, 2017, Scott Pruitt stated that carbon dioxide emissions are not “a primary contributor to the global warming that we see.”
There have been reports lately that the EPA’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative budget will be severely cut by the current administration. We, here in Door County, know how important it is to have a clean and healthy Green Bay and Lake Michigan. Our local economy, recreation and quality of life depend on it.
I think this is a non-partisan issue that all of us who love the beauty and health of our Great Lakes should be concerned about. Let your elected representatives know how you feel about having a climate change denier in charge of the EPA! Let them know you don’t want funds for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative cut! Call or write to the President, Senators Baldwin and Johnson, and Representative Gallagher!
