Letter to the Editor: Search/Rescue/Recover

Grateful. That’s how I feel for the men and women who either make it their life’s work or volunteer their time when someone goes missing in the beautiful, but dangerous waters that surround us in Door County. What a blessing for all of us that there are people at the other end of the line to take that call and galvanize a virtual army to come to the rescue. I imagine sometimes the work is rewarding, like when they found the mother and two boys off Nicolet Bay last summer. But other times it’s these everyday heroes who find the lifeless bodies of someone’s loved one(s), like earlier this summer near Cave Point and again off Horseshoe Island. Last weekend, a car in the Sister Bay marina was the latest tragedy. Thankfully one girl was brought to safety. Tragically, another was not.

It’s a special kind of person who willingly puts him/herself in danger for the sake of others. These brave, selfless foot soldiers march right into the most horrific chapters of our collective lives. No doubt they carry a heavy burden every time we lose someone. If I could, I would personally thank each team member involved in this grueling work. They put their own lives at risk and I’m grateful to them for the searching, rescuing and recovering they do on behalf of us all.
