Letter to the Editor: Sharing of Information

Regarding the Jan. 19 article “Wolf Hearing Heats Up,” it’s a strange world we live in where the federal government is threatening states that do not cooperate with ICE but our state government is considering a bill that would prohibit state agencies from sharing information with federal agencies related to wolf hunting. One defender of the state bill stated that “They [the federal government] should hire the staff necessary to review these things if they believe it’s that important.” That’s a valid point which raises some questions. If the federal government is supposed to be responsible for hiring the staff to police wolf killing, should it not also be responsible for hiring adequate staff to deport people vs. relying on state and local police? If the federal government is going to punish states for not sharing information about deporting people, should the federal government punish states for not sharing information about killing wolves? If a state can pass a law prohibiting sharing of information on wolf killing, can a state pass a law prohibiting sharing information on deporting people?
