Letter to the Editor: Vote Yes for Sturgeon Bay Schools

Great communities are defined by a multitude of factors – one of them being excellent schools. Sturgeon Bay has a long history of an excellent school system going back many, many years. I am writing this letter to encourage Sturgeon Bay residents to keep their schools great by voting YES on the upcoming referendum. Our statewide formula for funding school systems is woefully underfunding most school systems and Sturgeon Bay is no exception.

We are lucky to have a terrific school system in our community with dedicated teachers and administration. This is reflected in the many great things that are happening at Sturgeon Bay Schools. As recently as last year, Sturgeon Bay High School was ranked the 23rd best high school in the state by U.S. News and World Reports. The high school offers what they call Advanced Placement courses which give high school students who pass an exam at the end of the course college credit. Last year Sturgeon Bay High School students wrote 67 AP Exams in nine different course areas with more than 80 percent obtaining advanced standing in their area of study. These are just a couple of examples of the great things that are happening in our Sturgeon Bay schools.

The referendum is going to impact our property taxes. For a home of $100,000 value there will be an increase on average of just more than $3.90 per month for the next three years. I feel this is a good value when you consider the high caliber students our Sturgeon Bay Schools are producing.

Please vote YES for our schools and keep Sturgeon Bay Schools something we can all be proud of.
