Letter to the Editor: Welcome, GEO-DC

Why do we come to Door County to visit or to stay? The beauty of the water, the sky and the land are often cited, but there is water, sky and land everywhere, and much of it is beautiful. What makes Door County stand out is a special quality of the combination of these elements? There is here a certain “rightness.”

When we see the fractured limestone bluffs climbing out of the waves at sunset we sense that this day’s combination of elements is a unique occurrence, and we feel lucky to have arrived here at this moment —to see, hear, and feel this experience. Such experiences often give us a direct awareness of the earth’s interconnected wholeness. However there can be an additional pleasure if we have some knowledge of the cultural and scientific underpinnings of the event.

In Door County this often provided by the excellent work of the contributors and staff writers of the Pulse. The county is also fortunate to have state and county parks, historical foundations, and local museums working to enrich our experiences. We thank you all.

A new group is poised to add significantly to these efforts. GEO-DC [Greater Escarpment Organization of Door County] is opening a Discovery Center at the Grand View Bluff in Ellison Bay. We should all welcome its efforts to broaden and deepen our understanding of the beautiful piece of the Niagara Escarpment on which we live and on which we depend.
