Letter to the Editor: A Shout-out for Every Day Is Earth Day 2022

A note of appreciation to the individuals, businesses and organizations who gave generously of their time and talents and provided financial support for Every Day Is Earth Day 2022, when events returned to in-person programs, April 21-24, in celebration of Earth Day.

Door County’s participation in this worldwide, time-honored celebration demonstrates its commitment to the importance of adopting and creating sustainable practices benefiting Mother Earth – and us, her inhabitants.

Earth Day Thursday featured a screening of the important, encouraging documentary Kiss the Ground, which looks at serious environmental concerns but also presents steps and practices that are now being implemented and moving us toward more sustainable living.

Friday evening’s artistic celebration at Northern Sky’s Gould Theater, emceed by Doc Heide, brought stirring poetry readings from Write On, Door County members, along with some really terrific music by local artists Jeanne Kuhns, Terry Murphy and Paul Taylor, who found just the right words and notes to make folks happy to be earthbound! We also heard firsthand about important work being accomplished in the county by earth-loving organizations.

Saturday’s expo at Egg Harbor’s beautiful “green” Kress Pavilion presented more opportunities for other Door County environmental organizations and businesses to display, demonstrate and educate. Talks and workshops ranged from tree planting and composting to detoxifying skin care. Outside, the raptor demonstration by Rob Hults and loyal volunteers from Open Door Bird Sanctuary provided a close look at several beautiful animals and education about the critical role they play in nature.

Sunday’s event took place at Crossroads at Big Creek. True to Crossroads’ purpose, its staff again designed programs introducing us to habitat and wetland restoration and also provided information on some of the unwanted species to watch for at our own homes. Staff members also led hikes into the work area and highlighted the many learning and volunteer opportunities available to all of us.

Every Day Is Earth Day takes place to bring many opportunities to light to encourage participation.

With many thanks,
