Letter to the Editor: Commitment to Community Demonstrated at House & Garden Walk

As we celebrate the 60th year of the Door County House & Garden Walk, we pause to reflect on what a “60-year legacy of commitment to community” means.

Thanks to the generosity of our homeowners, sponsors, volunteers and those who attended the July 27 House & Garden Walk, we raised more than $61,000 for the Door County Medical Center Skilled Nursing Facility and hospice care.

The first House & Garden Walk in 1961 was organized by then-Auxiliary President Delores Allen and sold more than 1,000 tickets at $2 each. As printed tickets ran out, the members of the auxiliary hand-printed more, and the long history of successful House & Garden Walks had begun.

Today, as we follow in the footsteps of the creative thinkers, hardworking volunteers and dedicated people who have paved the way, we strive to continue their legacy into the next 60 years and beyond.

Community is a huge part of our success, and we thank each integral part that composes our wonderful Door County. From longtime patrons of the House & Garden Walk to this year’s newcomers and the homeowners who shared their historical and character-filled homes, your generosity continued to amaze us. The list of people to thank is long, with sponsors, ticket outlets, volunteers and committee members among them. It truly takes a village.

Although 2020 was a challenging year for our county, state, country and world, we are grateful for the gifts that our community provided. In true Door County fashion, we came together: neighbor helping neighbor, strangers stepping in to provide support to others, and at the forefront of it all, our health care workers, who brought us through this pandemic with their dedication and perseverance, delivering us to a place where we could once again gather and celebrate together.

On behalf of the volunteers of the Door County Medical Center Auxiliary’s 60th Celebration Committee, we thank everyone for their continued commitment to community.
