Letter to the Editor: Do You Believe in Miracles?

We at the Stella Maris Catholic Parish are celebrating our five-year food-pantry anniversary and publicly thanking all who have re-created a miracle cited in the Bible’s often-referenced Sermon on the Mount. Our Fish Creek church’s 24/7 food pantry continues to multiply food, just as in the time of Jesus, when the crowd of thousands was fed from a few fish and loaves.

Matthew’s chapters tell us that those attending the sermon not only heard the Beatitude guidelines on how to treat our neighbors, but the world also received the “Our Father” words to help us each day with reminders of what has been given to humans to better our world. All that, and thousands of hungry people were fed.

Please spread the word: The 24/7 food pantry still has its door open at our Fish Creek church, and no appointments are needed. The lights are on, and a donation bin is there to receive gifts of nonperishable food. Volunteers visit each day to sort food donations, and our staff records and accounts for the sustaining funds donated not only by parish members, but also by local neighbors and vacationing visitors who discover that poverty visits Door County also.

We have been blessed especially with ongoing help from Egg Harbor’s Main Street Market through which we purchase – and it delivers – large supplies of wholesale-priced foods. With the COVID-19 crisis, the Door County Food Pantry Coalition Fund has bolstered our purchasing ability, and many other businesses have provided discount coupons for perishable items. And our northern Door County post offices have sponsored annual food-collection drives.

So, manifested miracles happen with the help of many, and for that, our community is thankful.
