Letter to the Editor: Judge by Results Rather Than Words

Looking back at my time at Gibraltar High School from 1957 to 1961, I remember my classes on economics and social studies, and I remember my teachers instilling in me a responsibility for making up my own mind about what I believed, including politics. I don’t remember politics being a central focus in the topics and issues like I see today.

When I found out two conservative board members were leaving the Gibraltar School Board, I grew concerned. Conservative voices offer valuable perspectives for our children. I see many new ideologies that have less to do with the basis for success and more to do with telling our children that they must prioritize the plights of others at the expense of themselves.

Parents, please pay attention. Your children are deserving of every good thing in life. They are deserving of every freedom that we are lucky to have here in America, and I urge you to prioritize your duty to ensure that these freedoms continue to exist for your children. Many – like me during my time in Taiwan as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps – have witnessed the effects of socialism that led to communism, how easily it twists its way into society unnoticed. It starts with dividing us on the basis of ideology, whether that is skin color, religion or sex.

You are still young. If nothing else, remind your children that no matter what someone believes, what someone looks like, how someone grew up or what “privileges” it seems someone has or doesn’t have, it is that person’s actions toward you that matter. We should be judged by results rather than words.
