Letter to the Editor: Old Schoolhouse Would Make Nice Hotel

In regard to the bickering going on in Sturgeon Bay about who owns the dirt piles on the vacant waterfront property.

If in fact those on the city council of Sturgeon Bay are in favor of the hotel and had asked Mr. Papke and his company, Sawyer Hotel Development LLC, to build one on that property and gave them the dirt for fill, they should own up to it.

It’s not what I think is a good place for a hotel but I do think in keeping with the distinctive phrase “A New Spirit of Cooperation” the city should offer the Sawyer Hotel Development LLC the beautiful old red brick elementary school which is now in foreclosure for a hotel. It has class, and it has a million-dollar view of our unique little city of Sturgeon Bay for all seasons of the year. I’m sure the roof could be reinforced to become a gallery for viewing. Sturgeon Bay has character. Let’s keep it that way.

Now I understand the tower at Potawatomi Park will not be replaced. We do not need any more Applebee’s and cheap-looking loft buildings.

The ball diamond behind the school building could be moved or discontinued. We have money to build ball fields and soccer fields and it takes lots of money to keep them groomed. I saw something a week ago I could not believe it – a groundskeeper out there with a snowblower clearing the snow off the playing field on Oregon Street.
