Letter to the Editor: Respect My Limitations

Volunteering is a win-win, as we all know, but just a word to those who coordinate the volunteers.

When a volunteer tells you the limits regarding the time they are able and willing to donate, please respect that.

I’ve been doing some volunteer work for what I feel is a very worthy cause, here in Door County, but very nearly withdrew from the organization last week. I was spoken to in a manner (more than once over the last month) that implied laziness on my part and a lack of enthusiasm, because I am unable, due to work and a health issue, to put in as much time as the founder believes I should. I shall continue to donate my time and efforts as I’m able, to further a good cause, to fulfill a one-year commitment, but will probably move on to something else after my commitment is over.

In conclusion, when your volunteers are doing the best they can for you, don’t try to push the envelope. Don’t try to make them feel guilty because they are not doing more. We volunteer because we really do want to help. But please, respect our limitations.
