Letter to the Editor: Support School Referendums

The League of Women Voters of Door County urges residents of the school districts of Sevastopol and Southern Door to support their schools’ educational programs by voting “yes” on the referendums that appear on the Nov. 3 ballot.

Since 1927, the League of Women Voters at the national, state and local levels has studied and promoted the improvement of public education. The League supports a system of school funding that:

• Includes an educational-aid formula that primarily equalizes taxing rates and spending per student.

• Ensures that children’s opportunity for a good education is not limited by the fiscal ability of their school district.

• Promotes equality in educational opportunity for all Wisconsin students.

Schools continue the struggle to give students opportunities to learn, which they deserve. Districts have eliminated teacher and staff positions; curtailed class offerings, programs and resources; and postponed building maintenance. Fund balances are disappearing, and many schools in Wisconsin are in financial straits. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has created myriad additional expenses for communications needs that affect everyone, including all students and their teachers.

What can you do? Become informed and then vote. To find information about these referendums, go to the website of the Sevastopol School District at sevastopol.k12.wi.us and/or the Southern Door School District at southerndoor.k12.wi.us. Each website has a ballot question displayed on a sample ballot.

Please support quality education for the young people in Door County by voting “yes.”
